Wellness Model

“You can reduce your anxiety somewhat by facing the fact that there isn’t a mechanic alive who doesn’t louse up a job once in a while. The main difference between you and the commercial mechanics is that when they do it you don’t hear about it — just pay for it, in additional costs prorated through all your bills. When you make the mistakes yourself, you at least get the benefit of some education.” ~ Robert M. Pirsig: Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Wellness Model

Wellness is defined as an active, lifelong process of fostering health, balance and wholeness by being aware of the interrelatedness of body, mind, spirit and community. Effective performance results from an active, lifelong interconnection of these three main components:

  1. Lifestyle (such as sleep quality, good health and nutrition, regular exercise, hobbies/interests)
  2. Social (i.e. satisfying family/ social supports, spiritual beliefs)
  3. Mental Skills (such as the capacity to self assure)

When trying to understand the idea behind the Wellness Model, it can help to picture a tripod, with each leg as equally important as the other. In this same way, a balanced life results when each component is being experienced to the fullest. Working effectively with anxiety doesn’t just involve the anxiety process itself, but rather it involves all these components working together. Positive results are achieved when there is a willingness to take responsibility for one’s own health and functioning and to be proactive in creating a balanced and fulfilling life.

The objective of the Wellness Model is to do more than scratch the surface of treating anxiety but rather learning to work with it effectively and understanding the process that gets you feeling anxious and how to overcome that. Be proactive and start managing your anxiety today. For an appointment or free 20 minute phone consultation call (585) 262-4070.
